  • The Gallimaufry
Spring 2012 saw the opening of a new venue on Bristol's Gloucester Road, a lively neighbourhood full of independent shops and cafés. 'The Galli' was set to take over from the long-established venue 'The Prom' and wanted a solid identity to let the locals know they were shaking things up.

The name 'Gallimaufry' comes from the French, meaning 'a mix or medley' and spoke of their ethos 'to make the best of what's at hand'. With home-cooked food, heaps of reclaimed furniture and a bar full of 'Curios' objects the identity was composed of various letterforms, hand-crafted in a traditional style.

With just a few days to transform the venue, Ged enlisted the help of local sign painter James Cooper (www.dappersigns.co.uk) to create a huge 35' sign- a clear message to say they'd officially arrived.

  • The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám
The Folio Society is a prestigious publishing house known for creating lavish editions of classic literary titles. In Spring 2012 they commissioned me to produce some custom lettering for a new edition of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, a book of 12th Century Persian poetry translated by the Edward Fitzgerald in 1859.

To capture the rich and exotic imagery of the text I studied the Naskh form of Arabic writing and developed a new calligraphic hand with an Arabic feel. Working closely with the team at the Folio Society we balanced the extent of the arabesque style with the legibility and print considerations for the book spine.

This title will be released later this year, for more info please visit: www.foliosociety.com

  • Going Gone Gorilla
One of sixty gorilla sculptures created to celebrate Bristol Zoo's 175th birthday. Creative agency, 375, commissioned us to produce custom hand drawn lettering for the gorilla relating to the bushmeat trade in Africa. The life-size sculpture was then covered in a heat-sensitive black paint to make an interactive show-piece located in the heart of the city centre.

  • Muckle Flugga
A piece of calligraphy commissioned by a client with Scottish heritage, Muckle Flugga is a small rocky island in the far north of the British Isles. This piece is based on the ancient half-uncial form of writing that was used in illuminated manuscripts such as the Lindisfarne Gospels. This form of writing is created using a broad nib set at a 20 degree angle and was recreated using taped pencils, finishing the artwork in Illustrator and Photoshop.
